RC Waterproofing: The Right Way to Protect Your Electronics
There is nothing quite like the thrill of sending your RC basher full-throttle through a massive mud puddle or blasting a 4WD short-course truck across a snow-covered field. But that thrill can quickly turn into a costly nightmare when your car suddenly twitches, smokes, and dies.
Water and electronics are natural enemies. While many modern Ready-To-Run (RTR) vehicles claim to be "waterproof" right out of the box, the harsh reality is that they are usually just water-resistant. A splash is fine, but complete submersion will quickly fry a circuit board. If you want to truly dominate the wet conditions, you need to take matters into your own hands. Here is the right way to waterproof your RC electronics.
1. The Waterproofing Arsenal: What You Need
Before you crack open your electronics cases, you need the right chemicals. Do not use standard super glue or household silicone, as they can trap heat or eat away at circuit boards.

Silicone Conformal Coating: This is the holy grail of RC waterproofing. It brushes on like clear nail polish and cures into a thin, flexible, waterproof barrier right over the circuit board. It also allows heat to escape!

Dielectric Grease: A non-conductive grease used to pack electrical plugs and sensor wires to keep water out without blocking the electrical signal.

Marine Grease: A thick, waterproof grease used to pack servo splines and gearboxes to physically block water from entering the casing.

Liquid Electrical Tape: Excellent for sealing the areas where thick wires exit plastic casings (like on an ESC).
2. Waterproofing the Receiver (The Brain)
Your receiver is the most vulnerable part of your car. If water touches those exposed pins, you will lose signal and risk a runaway vehicle.
The Fix: 1. Open the plastic receiver case and carefully remove the circuit board.
2. Brush a generous layer of Silicone Conformal Coating over the entire board, front and back.
3. Crucial Step: Do not coat the metal pins where you plug in your servo and ESC!
4. Once dry (usually 24 hours), put it back in the case.
5. When you plug your wires back in, dab a little Dielectric Grease over the exposed plugs to seal the gaps.
3. Waterproofing the Steering Servo (The Muscle)
Most "waterproof" servos rely on tiny rubber O-rings that degrade over time. To make a servo truly submarine-proof, you need a multi-layered approach.
The Fix:

Open the bottom of the servo case. Gently pull the circuit board out just enough to expose it.

Coat the board with Conformal Coating (avoiding the motor contacts). Let it dry.

Before reassembling, smear a thin layer of Marine Grease along the plastic seams where the case halves meet.

Take the servo horn off the top. Pack the output spline (the gear sticking out of the top) with a heavy glob of Marine Grease to stop water from traveling down the shaft and into the gears.
4. Waterproofing the ESC (The Heart)
The Electronic Speed Controller generates massive heat, which makes waterproofing it very tricky. If you completely cover an ESC in thick epoxy, it will overheat and catch fire.
The Fix:

If your ESC is already heavily potted (filled with hard resin from the factory), simply use Liquid Electrical Tape around the base of the wires where they exit the resin. This prevents water from traveling down the wire casing.

If the circuit board is exposed, carefully apply Conformal Coating, but never coat the metal heat sink! The heat sink must remain bare metal to dissipate heat into the air.
5. Motors: Brushless vs. Brushed
Brushless Sensorless Motors: These are essentially waterproof by design because the internal coils are sealed and there are no contacting parts. However, water will destroy the metal bearings. You must oil your motor bearings immediately after running in water to prevent rust.
Brushless Sensored Motors: Highly vulnerable! The sensor board will fry instantly if wet. You must open the motor and conformal coat the sensor board, and pack the exterior sensor wire plug with dielectric grease.

The Post-Run Maintenance Check
Even with perfect waterproofing, you cannot just throw a wet, muddy RC car into the closet. Water will rust your hardware, hinge pins, and bearings within 24 hours. After every wet run, blow the car off with an air compressor and spray all metal bearings, screws, and turnbuckles with a water-displacing oil (like WD-40 or a dedicated RC bearing lube).
